Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is a lipid metabolism disorder, which leads to coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. Hypercholesterolemia can be treated traditionally with plants, that contains alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, saponins and steroids, where these five compounds can be found in cottonwood leaves. The aims of this study are to determine the activity of 70% ethanol extract of cottonwood leaves (Ceiba pentandra. L) at the dose 400 mg/KgBW and 800 mg/KgBW  in the reduction of total cholesterol levels on hypercholesterolemia rats and which one is most optimum dose. The rats were divided into 4 groups and were adapted for 7 days. After that, all the total cholesterol level were measured (T1). The rats were conditioned to hypercholesterolemia by giving 10 ml/kgBW of quail yolk for 10 days and the total cholesterol level (T2) were measured. Furthermore, rats were given some treatments according to their groups. Group one as positive control (0.18 mg/200grBW of simvastatin), group two as negative control (0.5% of Na CMC), group three (400mg/KgBW of 70% ethanol extract of cottonwood leaves) and group four (800 mg/KgBW of 70% ethanol extract of cottonwood leaves) for 14 days and then their total cholesterol level is measured (T3). The data were analyzed with Anova and SNK test. The results showed that 70% ethanol extract cottonwood leaves at dose both dose have the activity to reduce the total cholesterol level of hypercholesterolemia rats and the most optimal dose is 800 mg/KgBW.     Keywords: Catoonwood leaves, hypercholesterolemia, total cholesterol level, 70% ethanol extract of cottonwood leaves
